before an artists wants to promote there song they make a music video but before making the video they have to they have to choose a style that fits well with their song. Here are some examples of music video styles, conventions and techniques.


Animation
Daft Punk - Digital Love

This is the music video for the song Digital Love by Daft Punk. The style of this video is animation with narrative.throughout the video we do not see no footage or performances from the artists this is because they like to keep there identity hidden so they do this by using cartoon characters as them self's. This video can be considered homage to the Japanese animated comics Manga and other Science Fiction movies. The video is also part of the music film Interstellar 5555: The Story of the Secret Star System.this song is from the album discovery. this music video will have a lot of interest from the audience because its an interesting video and there is a story that can be followed by the audience.



Narrative
Eminem feat Rihanna- Love The Way You Lie

This is the music video for the song Love The Way You Lie by Eminem and Rhianna. the style of this video is narrative and performance we see Eminem and Rhianna performing the song and we also see Megan Fox and Dominic Monoghan acting in the video. the video contains domestic violence there a love hate relationship going on between Megan and Dominic. Megan and Dominic also help promote the song because they are well known actors.




 Live Performance
Oasis- Let There Be Love

this is the music video for the song let there be love by oasis the style of this video is live performance and in concert. in the video we see the artists performing on different stages this is called a montage were a number of clips are put together people do this because it saves money and it gives the audience a concert experience makes them want to go see one for real. It also proves to the audience that the artists can perform live. Slow motion effects have been used to slow down and capture important moments in the video e.g. the audience cheering and showing admiration for the band.



 Parody
Eat It- Weird Al Yankovic (Michael Jackson- Beat it parody)

this music video is for the song eat it by weird Al Yankovic the style of this song is a parody its a re make of Michael Jackson song beat it weird Al Yankovic made new lyrics for the song and created this video we see weird Al yankovic performing the song in the video. this song will help promote Michael song beat it. 

Foo Fighters –
 Walk (Pastiche of Falling Down

This video looks very similar to a scene in the Film Falling down which was made years before the video. It has some narrative in it at the beginning the guy was in traffic and the gets fed up with waiting so he gets out and then in in the middle he does some small crimes and then gets chased by the police then at the end he gets to band practice the then police catch up with him and end up arrested him. 

Kanye West -  Gold Digger (influence of commercials):

 

This video does promote the artist but this video doesn’t promote women in a positive way it just makes them look attractive so this does show that sex does help sells. They do use green screen in this video this means the artist and dancers perform in front of a green screen then in editing they add any background they want them set in.

Thirty Seconds To Mars -  The Kill (Bury Me) (referencing – The Shining):

This have a big reference to the film The Shinning for example similar camera shots, similar costumes and a similar storyline. They use special effects for example make two of the same person in the same room at the same time and added lighting or dimmed the lighting to make it look spookier. In parts the timing changed in the video like speeded up or slowed down. 

Radiohead - Street Spirit (abstract):

 

Lots of special effects in this video like live super imposing and super imprecision, they looked like they use green screen and video are in black and white. The lighting techniques are outstanding they used it very cleverly like to make his face stand out or to blend in. They use quiet a lot of slow motion but it works well with the music and the video.   

The Beastie Boys – Sabotage (impressionist):

This video is an impressionist view on a American Police drama.  There is some narrative in this video there is a start a middle and the end. At the start there just people with stick on beards and wigs then in a middle there is a criminal and they get chased by the police then in the end they get caught. 



 Conventions

1.     Lyric interpretation

In the video “The Lonely Island – I’m on a Boat” they are singing about there on a boat and they actually are they also sing about flipping burgers and they actually do in the video. They do pretty much everything they say in there song they do in the video. This song isn’t serious so neither is the video. Also in the video  “Eminem Ft Rihanna – Love the Way You Lie” they do use Lyric interpretation but in a more serious way for example they sing about abuse and they actually hit and fight in the video but they have to do this very carefully because some viewers could take it very to heart also when they talk about romance the get passionate with each other.

 

1.     Allusion (a reference)

In most of these videos they have little reference to other this like films and other music for example:  “The Lonely Island – I’m on a Boat” there is a part of the video where he stands on the top of the boat with his arms out and this looks like a part of a famous film “titanic” where the couple stand at the top of the boat with there arms out so you could reference it to that film. “Foo Fighters – Walk” – this film can be completely reference to the film “Falling Down” because the video is a copy of a scene out of the film with a few things different.  Like the start of the video where he sat in his car looking around until he gets out of his car and walks is the same as the scene in the film.

1.     Extension or consolidation of song’s meaning

“The Beastie Boys – Sabotage” – without watching this video it isn’t very clear what’s the song about but watching the video give me a better view on what the artist wants to get across in his song.

1.     Links to other artists

“Eminem Ft Rihanna – Love the Way You Lie” – This video features Rihanna this means if people likes Eminem song featuring her they will look at her music and might become a fan so this helps promote Rihanna and her music. “The Lonely Island – I’m on a Boat”  - in this this video it Features T-pain so this will do the same as Rihanna in the song love the way you lie which she features in it will promote T-Pain and may gain him more fans and make him that little bit more money for him and his record label. “Kanye West - Gold Digger” – this video also features Jamie foxx so this will link his music and anything he’s done to this video so it could make him fans but it also could bring Kanye some more new fans from Jamie’s fan base.

Techniques

1.     Cutting to the beat

Thirty Seconds To Mars - The Kill – this is a good example of cutting to the beat because you can see when the music speeds up so does the clips in the video so I helps to hear and see that the pace in the video and the music has changed and gives you a better overall feeling and understanding off the song by this video by the pace its set in.

1.     Effects

“Kanye West - Gold Digger” – uses a few different effects in his video like he uses greenscreen, a flashing effect which makes the image change very quickly, different types of lighting using different lighting techniques and adding effect to make things flash and light up.

1.     Miming and lip sync

All music videos the artist or performer mime’s so all the video I have looked at had the artist mime’s

1.     Use of multi image

“Thirty Seconds To Mars - The Kill” – In one of the scenes they use an effect to make two of the same person in the same room at the same time o the used a multi image.

1.     Chroma key (green screen)

They use green screen to make the video look effect and it is a cheaper way to make the artist and performer look like there in another city or country also the can do some unusual effects and looks on it to make it look different like these have:  “Kanye West - Gold Digger” “Eminem Ft Rihanna – Love the Way You Lie”
